Goodbye Google?
|
It's been awhile since you've heard from me Reader. That's mostly because I'm over the internet. As in, I might move to a cabin in the woods and never start up a computer again. Ok, so that's a bit extreme but I've honestly been exhausted by social media and technology for several months now. It seems like every day AI is shoved in my face and social media is full of the world's latest horrors. It's exhausting. Tuesday May 26th, Google search went full AI. What does that mean? They implemented the new Gemini 3.5 Flash model to their search so now instead of a page of blue links, it aggregates data from the web and shows you what it think you want to know. You can still scroll (and scroll and scroll) to get to page links but it's a pain in my opinion. Myself (and many others) are not happy about the update and are honestly so tired of AI being forced upon us. This IG post does a great job of breaking down why "google it" is now bad advice.β DuckDuckGo, another search engine (and the one I'm using from now on) reported a 30% increase in US search traffic on May 26th. Why do I like DuckDuckGo? It lets you customize how you want AI incorporated in the search. Never want AI summaries? Just tell it. It also lets you filter out AI generated images in it's image search with one click, one time. I've spent countless hours teaching about Google tools. Now I'm exploring other options. I'm switching to Vivaldi for my browser and will slowly be shifting some of my email over to Proton and using Proton Drive as well. It does everything Google Drive does along with Docs and Sheets. No Slides yet but I'm optimistic it'll come soon. The free version of Proton mail is limited. I'll probably upgrade to the $3.99/month option. Pay?! For email?! Yep! Because if you aren't paying for the product, you are the product. And honestly, I spend $4/month on way dumber stuff than email. π€·ββοΈ Do you need to stop using Google? No. It's your decision. You get to choose the tools you use (more on that coming soon π). Should avoid AI? That's a loaded question. Personally I say "yes" for several reasons but you get to make your own choices. STILL AVOIDING THE INTERNET IN ORDER TO SURVIVE,P.S.
